3D Laser scanning & As-Built Services

Our specialists leverage the latest 3D laser scanning technology, imaging the world with highly accurate proximity data. We collect large amounts of data quickly, accurately, cost-efficiently and safely in all types of locations – including those that are too dangerous to survey with conventional methods.
Using precision tripod mounted laser scanners, any building, structure, Piping, Equipment, Ducts or any complex Plant facilities can be mapped to mm accuracies. The data is collected completely remotely without the need to physically touch anything. From a safety perspective, this can be very effective in mitigating risk as the mapping is done without the need to climb and take measurements by hand. With a laser that measures millions of points, 3D Scan data can then be integrated with other information in CAD, GIS and web platforms where it can be used by engineers make informed decisions. The data can also be integrated into the engineering design workflow to identify design conflicts and to test design feature ideas.
snwel Engineering® has conducted numerous 3D laser scans on a variety of man-made and natural features and can provide 3D laser scanning services. The data from 3D laser scans has been used by engineers to help with decision making throughout project life cycles in nearly every engineering sector including buildings, plants, transportation, infrastructure, rails, aviation, energy, utilities and oil and gas.
The applications are endless, as snwel Engineering® specialists can collect as-built data for many types of structures, including piping, single vessels and entire plants, as well as topographies, including single and multi-lane roads, intersections and bridges.

Bringing Site Conditions to your Desktop

3D Laser scan will capture exiting environments in high speeds and with very high accuracy.
At snwel Engineering® we are able to create As-Is 3D models of existing piping, structural steel, mechanical equipment, electrical, and buildings.

TIE-INPOINTS ALLOCATION AND DESIGN FOR RETROFIT PROJECTS

The data stored in scanners known as point cloud can be used to allocate the best required location for new tie-in point or piping modifications.« less
With a high accuracy scan the routing of new pipes can be completed without creating a full 3D model of that facility. Instead, we would focus on a partial 3D model of the area being designed. After verifying proposed location of the tie-in point (using point cloud data only), tie-in spool can be accurately designed to perfectly match existing piping using general industry standard or client specifications. Following approval process, we are able to produce fabrication drawings (Isometrics) including BOM (Bill of Materials).

CONCEPTUAL DESIGN

Along with the tie-in point allocation and design, point cloud data can be used to create very accurate preliminary designs.

Oil and gas facilities can be congested, with difficult and restricted access to higher elevations. Therefore, it is a challenging and very time-consuming process to collect As-Built data with traditional measuring techniques not mention accuracy.

At snwel Engineering®, can do high resolution and detailed scans that represent real As-Is site conditions. Scans are used to verify all construction challenges and to find the best way for a new addition of piping, structural steel or electrical cable tray. This technique eliminates or at least limits the requirements for “field dimension verification” prior to fabrication and construction.

REVERSEENGINEERING

High resolution scans help to analyse and collect a large amount of data on an object that is being scanned. It recognizes its appearance in the point cloud data which is stored in a very high degree of detail up to millimetres in accuracy. snwel Engineering® uses the latest software to reproduce such an object to its complete present condition and parameters.

3DMODELING AND 2D DRAWINGS EXTRACTION

3D models are created from a point cloud data, where each point has its own coordinate system of X,Y,Z. Stored information will register a true representation of existing objects.
At snwel Engineering®, with the use of latest software, we are able to merge the collected points to produce a true 3D As-Is or As-Built model representation. Created 3D model can be ositioned in its true location based on information provided from survey data.
From 3D models the 2D drawing extraction can be obtained, such as:
Piping GA (General Arrangement/Construction Drawings)
Piping ISO (Isometric/Fabrication Drawings)
Structural Layouts and Detail Construction/Fabrication Drawings
Equipment, Mechanical Detail Drawings (Fabrication or Equipment Modification and Quality Control purposes)
Site Plans/Plot Plan Drawings

RED-LINED AND AS-BUILT P&ID DRAWINGS

In addition, snwel Engineering® can provide P&ID “Red-Line” mark-ups while performing laser scanning at the same facility. After the P&IDs are “Red-Lined” for the project, they can be back drafted and revised to As-Built status.

Benefits of 3D Laser Scanning

At snwel Engineering®, we strongly believe that using 3D laser scanning technologies is a great benefit to any project and design criteria. Conventionally, As-Built information would be documented with manual measurements and referenced to construction drawings. This traditional procedure has shown to be time-consuming, prone to omissions, and unsafe at times. We would like to demonstrate to our clients that the use of 3D laser scanning provides more accurate documentation, better visualization, and enhanced flexibility to accommodate any scope changes. A more detailed list of numerous benefits is listed below:
To estimate the scope and cost of a retrofit project, accurate as-built drawings are an essential during front-end engineering stages. 3D laser scanning technology offers an ideal solution for capturing existing geometry and physical relationships as a basis for front-end engineering.
3D laser scanning can also help provide viable solutions to challenges arising mid-project, restore confidence in achieving project goals, and reduce the impact of re-work and re-engineering arising from a low level of front-end engineering.
Laser scanning offers several advantages over traditional survey methods:
Proven lower cost as-built and topographic surveys, due to faster data collection and shorter project cycle times
Reduction or elimination of costly return visits to the site
More accurate, complete as-builts for retrofit and design, enabling offsite fabrication and less construction rework caused by interferences and fit-up problems
Reduced facility downtime, as a result of the unobtrusive scanning procedure
Scan data can be delivered via a complementary viewer, as 2D or 3D CAD, or
in a variety of laser scan formats that can be manipulated by the client.

What is Point Cloud?

A POINT CLOUD is a set of vertices in a three-dimensional coordinate system. These vertices are usually defined by X, Y, and Z coordinates, and typically are intended to be representative of the external surface of an object.

Point Cloud to Bim are most often created by 3d scanner. These devices measure in an automatic way a large number of points on the surface of an object, and often output a point cloud as a data file. The point cloud represents the set of points that the device has measured.

As the result of a 3D scanning process point clouds are used for many purposes, including to create 3D models for manufactured parts, quality inspection, and a multitude of visualization, animation, rendering.

Usually point clouds themselves are generally not directly usable in most 3D applications, and therefore are usually converted to polygon or triangle mesh models, or CAD/Revit models through a process commonly referred to as surface reconstruction. The point cloud of a manufactured part can be aligned to a CAD model (or even another point cloud to bim) and compared to check for differences. These differences can be displayed as color maps that give a visual indicator of the deviation between the manufactured part and the CAD model. Geometric dimensions and tolerance can also be extracted directly from the point cloud.
